Metabolic analysis

Definition

Metabolic analysis or “Metabolic Typing” follows an alternative medical concept according to which each person has an individually different metabolism. According to this endogenous and specific metabolism, a certain requirement of proteins, carbohydrates, fats and sometimes also trace elements is calculated. Depending on which company offers this metabolic analysis, the test person is assigned to certain types or evaluated as an individual result. In any case, the goal of a metabolic analysis is to offer the test person a concept for nutrition and sports that is appropriate for the individual metabolic type and that shows the test person a way to a healthy lifestyle. From a scientific point of view, however, the theory of metabolic types has not been proven and is therefore highly controversial.

Which methods are available for the analysis?

There are several ways to perform a metabolic analysis: Those who want it fast and easy can fill out various questionnaires on the Internet, which then provide immediate results. Here then certain factors are queried, which can give reference points to the metabolism of the test person. Who does not shrink from a certain expenditure, an investigation of the genetic material can consider.

For this purpose, a sample of body material, usually a saliva or blood sample, must be sent to the company for analysis. There the DNA of the test person is analyzed for certain genetic characteristics, on the basis of which the individual metabolic type is to be determined. While a test carried out online can be repeated more often and thus provide a current result, a DNA analysis assumes that the characteristics of the metabolism are unalterably anchored in the genetic material or certain gene locations of a person.

This is not scientifically verifiable. The reliability of such a genetic test is therefore very questionable. You want to know what metabolic type you are?

Costs of a metabolic analysis

The costs for a metabolic analysis depend strongly on the chosen method: While online available tests are usually available and feasible free of charge, a genetic analysis of cell material is a rather cost-intensive procedure. Depending on the company offering the test, costs of about 200 to 300€ can be incurred. This price usually includes information and consultation on the results of the analysis.
