Microcrystalline wax is used as an excipient in pharmaceuticals and personal care products.
Structure and properties
Microcrystalline wax is a purified mixture of solid, saturated, predominantly branched hydrocarbons. It is a petroleum product with a fine crystal structure. Different grades exist, with melting points ranging from about 60 to 100°C. Microcrystalline wax is lipophilic and therefore insoluble in water.
Areas of application
- As an excipient for medicinal products.
- As an ingredient for cosmetics, for the production of lip balms.
- For surface treatment of fruits: Melons, papayas, mangoes, avocados, pineapples (E 905).
- Technical applications (eg as a polishing agent).
