Milk is considered a popular and well-known household remedy against heartburn. It has been proven that milk calms the throat after heartburn. The pH value of milk is about 6.5 and is slightly acidic.However, compared to stomach acid (pH between 1.5-4.5), it has a neutralizing effect, so milk can help with heartburn. However, low-fat milk should be drunk preferably. Unsweetened yogurt or quark can also help with heartburn.

Home remedy against heartburn during pregnancy

Heartburn during pregnancy is very common and usually not a cause for concern. The most common cause of heartburn is the growing baby, which increasingly presses on the stomach and can lead to the belching of stomach acid. However, hormonal changes, especially progesterone, also lead to a slackening of the muscles in the uterus, but also in the gastrointestinal tract, whereupon heartburn can occur more quickly than usual.

The best home remedies against heartburn during pregnancy are dry oatmeal or rice waffles, which should be chewed until they are completely softened by saliva and then swallowed. Water, milk or fennel tea can also have a calming effect on the stomach. It is important not to lie down in the moments when heartburn occurs, but rather to sit down.

If possible, you should also avoid stress, coffee, alcohol, spicy food and lots of sugar. Furthermore, it helps to sleep with a raised upper body at night and to eat several small meals instead of three large ones in order not to overstretch the stomach too much. Heartburn during pregnancy is harmless in itself, but you should always consult a doctor if heartburn causes you too much worry.

Home remedy for heartburn caused by alcohol

On the one hand, high-proof alcohol has an irritating effect on the gastric mucosa, which causes increased production of gastric acid. On the other hand, the alcohol causes a reduced contraction (tension) of the sphincter between the esophagus and the stomach, so that gastric juice can enter the esophagus more easily and cause heartburn. The relaxation of the sphincter can also be triggered by low-proof alcohol.

To prevent recurring heartburn, alcohol should be avoided so that the stomach lining can calm down. Teas such as camomile flower tea can calm the stomach lining and reduce pain. In addition, you should generally drink a lot so that the gastric juice is diluted and thus no longer has such an aggressive effect on the mucous membranes.

Lavender tea also has a calming effect on the gastrointestinal tract. Care should be taken to ensure that the tea is not too hot, so that the mucous membranes, which are attacked anyway, are not additionally irritated. Linseed is another household remedy to reduce heartburn after alcohol consumption.

For this purpose the flaxseed is soaked in water. Afterwards the mucus is poured off and the remaining liquid is drunk. This then provides a protective layer of mucus on the mucous membrane and relieves the symptoms.
