Mistletoe: Dosage

Mistletoe herb can be taken orally or administered parenterally, that is, by injection. For the treatment of hypertension, mistletoe herb can be used orally in the form of tablets, coated tablets, capsules, pressed juices, powder preparations or drops.

Mistletoe herb is commercially available in the form of tea, including filter bags. The plant is also a component of some tea mixtures of the indication cardiovascular complaints. For supportive use in cancer, aqueous mistletoe extracts are offered in ampoules, which are then injected.

Mistletoe: what dose?

For the average daily dose, you should follow the manufacturer’s instructions.

Mistletoe – preparation as a tea

To prepare mistletoe tea, 2.5 g of the finely chopped herb (1 teaspoon equals about 2.5 g) is poured over cold water and allowed to steep, covered, at room temperature. After 10-12 hours, everything can be passed through a tea strainer.

In case of high blood pressure, 1-2 cups of the tea can be drunk daily.

When should mistletoe not be used?

Mistletoe preparations should not be taken in case of:

  • Pregnancy
  • An existing hypersensitivity to egg white or mistletoe preparations.
  • Chronic progressive infections, such as tuberculosis.
  • High febrile illnesses
  • Primary brain and spinal cord tumors

Special notes

  • Mistletoe is not suitable for self-medication.
  • It should be used in tumor diseases of the lymphatic and hematopoietic systems (including leukemia, (non)Hodgkin’s lymphoma) and immunological tumors (renal cell carcinoma, malignant melanoma) only after medical recommendation and under close monitoring.
  • The injection should not be made in inflammatory skin areas or irradiation fields.
  • Mistletoe should be stored dry and protected from light.
