Structure and properties
Mitotane or 1-chloro-2-(2,2-dichloro-1-(4-chlorophenyl)ethyl)benzene (C14H10Cl4, Mr = 320.041 g/mol) is a derivative of an insecticide.
Effects
Mitotane (ATC L01XX23) has a cytotoxic effect on the adrenal glands and may also cause adrenal inhibition without cell destruction. The exact mechanism of action is not known.
Indications
Symptomatic treatment of advanced (nonresectable, metastatic, or recurrent) adrenocortical carcinoma.
