Mode of action | Diclofenac and alcohol – is it compatible?

Mode of action

The effect of diclofenac is based on an inhibition of the cyclooxygenases COX-1 and COX-2, which are responsible for the regulation of inflammation. As enzymes they express substances such as prostaglandin. Prostaglandin is a tissue hormone responsible for pain, inflammation and blood clotting. By the non-selective inhibition of the cyclooxygenases, Diclofenac develops its analgesic and anti-inflammatory effect. The active ingredient Diclofenac is present in many different commercial products.Among them are Voltaren but also other people:

  • Diclo

Dosage forms of Diclofenac

The active ingredient diclofenac is commercially available in different versions and dosage forms. Diclofenac can be taken as tablets or capsules. It is also sold as an ointment, gel or patch. Suppositories, drops or injection solutions containing the active ingredient Diclofenac are also available. All versions of Diclofenac are pharmacy-only and, depending on the amount of active ingredient, also available on prescription.

Application

The use of Diclofenac depends on the particular version purchased:

  • Diclofenac gel or ointment is for external use. The gel or ointment is applied thinly to the affected area and rubbed in carefully. A bandage can be applied for protection, but it should not be airtight.

Before applying a bandage, wait a few minutes until the gel or ointment dries slightly. Diclofenac gel or ointment can be applied 3 times a day.

  • Diclofenac tablets are available in different versions. These can contain 25mg, 50mg, and 150mg of the active ingredient: Diclofenac 25mg is taken one to two hours before a meal with a sip of water.

Children over 15 years of age and adults take 1 to 2 tablets 2-3 times a day. This corresponds to a daily dose of 50mg to 150mg. The maximum daily dose for Diclofenac tablets is 150 mg.

This must be observed when taking the tablets. Thus, a 150 mg Diclofenac tablet is taken only once a day. In contrast, a tablet with 50 mg active ingredient can be taken 3 times a day.

  • Diclofenac suppositories contain 100 mg active ingredient and are administered once a day. If possible, the suppository should be inserted deep into the anus after bowel movement.
