Mode of action

Tavor® is a psychotropic substance, which means that it can have an influence on the psyche of a person. Tavor® has a damping and soporific effect on the body. It can also relieve anxiety and arousal.

It can also influence muscle tension and is effective against epileptic spasms. Tavor® binds to its receptor with a high degree of strength. There are special binding receptors in the nervous system for benzodiazepines, which benzodiazepines target and exert their effect.

These receptors, in turn, are closely linked to receptors of the brain‘s inhibitory messenger substances, known as GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid). When Tavor® binds to its specific benzodiazepine receptor in the brain, the inhibitory effect of the neurotransmitter GABA is enhanced. This increased inhibitory effect leads to the effects caused by Tavor®.

Metabolism

After taking the tablets, Tavor® is rapidly and almost completely absorbed by the mucous membrane in the gastrointestinal tract. It is metabolized into a so-called glucoronide, which is then excreted via the kidneys and urine. Benzodiazepines such as Tavor® should not be taken during pregnancy as Tavor® and its metabolic product can enter the bloodstream of the unborn child.

Contraindication

Tavor® should not be used in cases of known hypersensitivity to lorazepam or to other benzodiazepines. Tavor® should also not be used if you are addicted to benzodiazepines, alcohol or other drugs. As a general rule, children and adolescents under the age of 18 should not be treated with Tavor®.

Tavor® can still be given for a few indications. However, the manufacturer does not recommend its use in children under 6 years of age. For a variety of conditions, Tavor® should only be administered under strict control. These include the muscle disease myasthenia gravis and cerebellar gait disorders (spinal gangataxy). Caution is also required when combining Tavor® with alcohol or other medications.Since benzodiazepines can enter the fetal bloodstream, they should not be taken during pregnancy or while breast-feeding.
