Mold Allergy: Therapy

General measures

  • Clarification of the cause of mold exposure in the interior and proper remediation!
  • Avoid contact with the triggering allergens; a complete allergen cares is not however possible.
  • Allergy card always carry with you

Measures to be taken in case of mold allergy

  • Regular ventilation of the apartment by means of shock / cross ventilation.
  • The optimum humidity is between 40 and 60%.
  • Mildew stains first appear behind cabinets, wood paneling, etc.
  • Remove humidifiers from radiators
  • Houseplants should not be in the bedroom
  • Fruits and vegetables should not be stored openly
  • Air conditioners should be maintained regularly
  • Avoid contact with compost and dead plant parts

Conventional non-surgical therapy methods

  • Hyposensitization or desensitization (synonyms: specific immunotherapy (SIT), allergy vaccination): It is particularly suitable for children and young adults, as the effectiveness is best here. Therapy is indicated (indicated) for severe allergy that cannot be controlled with allergen abstinence or pharmacotherapy (e.g., antihistamines).
    • In patients with IgE-mediated Alt a 1 sensitization (with the mold Alternaria alternata) and allergic rhinoconjunctivitis (allergic inflammation of the nose and conjunctiva of the eye) with or without controlled asthma, a double-blind and placebo-controlled study showed that administration of 0.37 μg Alt a 1 per dose (= subcutaneous immunotherapy) at approximately 1-month intervals for 1 year, was effective and safe: parallel to treatment, there was improvement in allergic rhinoconjunctivitis symptoms; furthermore, skin reactivity decreased and serum IgG4 levels increased.
