Mometasone Inhalation

Mometasone powder inhaler was approved in many countries since 2005 (Asmanex Twisthaler). Mometasone furoate is also used to treat skin disorders and to treat disorders of the nasal mucosa; see Mometasone (dermal) and Mometasone nasal spray.

Structure and properties

Mometasone (C22H28Cl2O4, Mr = 427.4 g/mol) is present in the drug as mometasone furoate, a white powder that is practically insoluble in water. It is a furan derivative and a chlorinated glucocorticoid.

Effects

Mometasone (ATC R03BA07) has potent anti-inflammatory, antiallergic, and immunosuppressive properties. The effects are due to binding to the intracellular glucocorticoid receptor.

Indications

For the treatment of bronchial asthma.

Dosage

According to the professional information. Inhalation is performed regularly and once a day. After use, the mouth should be rinsed to avoid the development of oral thrush.

Contraindications

Mometasone furoate is contraindicated in cases of hypersensitivity. Refer to the drug label for complete precautions.

Interactions

Mometasone furoate is a substrate of CYP3A4. Strong CYP inhibitors such as ketoconazole may increase plasma concentrations.

Adverse effects

The most common potential adverse effects include oral thrush, pharyngeal inflammation, headache, and voice disturbance.
