General measures
Motion sickness in general
- Rest
- Plenty of fresh air
- Alcohol restriction (abstaining from alcohol)
- Nicotine restriction (refrain from tobacco use)
- Limited caffeine consumption (max. 240 mg of caffeine per day; equivalent to 2 to 3 cups of coffee or 4 to 6 cups of green/black tea).
- Before starting your trip, you should have slept in.
- During the trip, relaxation exercises and breathing exercises are often very helpful
- Avoid penetrating odors (eg, nasty gasoline or toilet smells).
- Do not read, watch TV, etc. in the car, train, plane, etc.
- At the first symptoms, lie on your back and close your eyes.
Car
- Take his place in the passenger seat; if possible, you should drive yourself
- Look at the road or at a fixed point on the horizon
- Take regular breaks to move around and breathe in fresh air
Railroad
- If possible sit in the direction of travel and walk up and down the aisle in between
- Fix gaze on a fixed point on the horizon
Bus
- Sit as far forward as possible and keep your eyes on the road
Airplane
- Select seat on the aisle in the center of the fuselage
- Leave view inside the aircraft
- Reduce fear of flying
Ship
- Avoid bow and stern; stay in the middle/lower part of the ship.
- Visual contact with the horizon

- Vaccinations according to travel medicine recommendations
Nutritional medicine
- Nutritional counseling based on nutritional analysis
- Nutritional recommendations according to a healthy mixed diet. This means, among other things:
- Daily total of 5 servings of fresh vegetables and fruits (≥ 400 g; 3 servings of vegetables and 2 servings of fruit).
- Once or twice a week fresh sea fish, i.e. fatty marine fish (omega-3 fatty acids) such as salmon, herring, mackerel.
- High-fiber diet (whole grains, vegetables).
- Observance of the following special dietary recommendations:
- Eat easily digestible, hot meals the evening before the trip:
- Small carbohydrate, low-fat meals with little fiber.
- During the trip, keep the stomach busy with small meals. The most suitable are:
- Rusk, low-fat cookies, dried white bread or salted pretzels.
- Drink enough
- If you have already vomited, you should replace the lost fluid by drinking. A soothing effect on the stomach have especially chamomile tea, black tea and sage tea.
- Eat easily digestible, hot meals the evening before the trip:
- Selection of suitable food based on the nutritional analysis.
