As with tennis elbow, the MRI of the elbow is not a standard diagnostic procedure. If no healing can be achieved under a consistent basic therapy of more than 3 months and ultrasound shows suspect areas at the base of the tendon, an MRI of the elbow is indicated to confirm the diagnosis. Ultrasound diagnostics for tendon damage is equally difficult for tennis elbow and golf elbow.

Costs

MRI of the child’s elbow

An MRI of the elbow in a child is often necessary after falling on the elbow if the cause of the complaints cannot be reached by alternative diagnostic means. An MRI of the elbow in a child does not pose any problems, since no radiation exposure is caused by an MRI. MRI is the method of choice, especially for injuries where soft tissue may have been damaged.

Since there is no radiation exposure compared to CT and X-ray, MRI is very popular with children. Nevertheless, children can become afraid of the narrowness (claustrophobia) of the tube and thus begin to move too much. It is important to try to take away the fear of the tube so that the child does not move, otherwise the image will be blurred, which makes it difficult to adequately assess the MRI image of the elbow.

Some hospitals have colorful lighting for the room especially for children and also children’s CDs, which allows the child to relax. In addition, the parents can be present to help the child relax. In rare cases, the child may also be given sedation, which is a drug that calms the child down and allows him or her to relax and, at best, even fall asleep.
