Mullein: Effect and Side Effects

The mucilages contained in mullein form a viscous solution with water, which is like a protective film on the surface of the mucous membranes and thus has an irritation-relieving effect. The irritation of the cough is thus reduced and the inflammation subsides more quickly.

Effect of saponins and iridoids.

Saponins lead on the one hand to a liquefaction of the bronchial secretion and thus to an easier detachment of the mucus from the airways. On the other hand, however, they also promote the removal of mucus by increasing the activity of the so-called ciliated epithelium – small motile cellular processes whose beat transports the mucus upward, where it can then be coughed up.

The iridoids it contains also have anti-inflammatory effects, while the diuretic effect is attributed to flavonoids.
