Pathogenesis (development of disease)

The cause of the disease is infection with the mumps virus, which is passed by smear or droplet infection.

Etiology (causes)

Behavioral causes

  • Avoid contact with ill persons during the phase of infection. However, this phase begins approximately one week before the appearance of the characteristic swelling of the parotid gland (parotid gland) and persists up to nine days after its appearance.
  • Poor hygiene especially in places with large numbers of people such as schools, kindergartens.

Disease-related causes

  • Immunocompromised individuals
