Muscle Pain (Myalgia): Complications

The following are the most important diseases or complications that may be contributed to by myalgia (muscle pain):

Musculoskeletal system and connective tissue (M00-M99).

  • Immune-mediated necrotizing myopathy (NM; form of myositis/muscle inflammation) act, which is considered a rare complication of statin therapy (0.1% of cases). This necessitates immunosuppressive therapy.Clinical presentation: progressive proximal/axial weakness (difficulty standing), dysphagia (difficulty swallowing), or myalgias.
  • Rhabdomyolysis (disintegration of striated muscle) (0.01% of patients on statin therapy).
