Muscular imbalance of the shoulder

If there is a muscular imbalance in the shoulder area, this can have painful consequences. In order to allow our shoulder joint a great deal of mobility and arm freedom, it is only slightly bony and is held mainly by soft tissues such as ligaments and our muscles. If this main stability system, the muscles, is now insufficiently developed or in imbalance, a changed posture with incarcerations and painful movement restrictions can occur, as in impingement syndrome or bursitis. There is also a risk of dislocation of the joint due to the lack of support. Since we need our arms every day, an injury in this area is very unpleasant and can take a long time to heal.

Muscular imbalance in the baby

A muscular imbalance can already exist in the baby. Whether congenital due to an unfortunate position in the womb or trained later. It is important to recognize and treat asymmetrical posture and unphysiological movement patterns early on. For this purpose, there are numerous physiotherapeutic concepts specialized in children, such as Bobath and Vojta as the best known. In order to offer the child an optimal therapy, it is recommended to choose therapists with experience and the right training.

Physiotherapeutic measures for muscular imbalance

The general goal in the treatment of muscular imbalance is to bring the muscles back into balance. Shortened muscles are stretched, weakened muscles are strengthened, tension is relieved. For long-term success, the cause is filtered out, the correct posture is worked on and a balancing exercise program is created.

Movement and breaking out of literally rigid patterns is the key. Change your posture often, just use the other arm – also a good workout for the head, train your whole body in sports, not just the same muscle groups. A muscular imbalance can also be counteracted by vibration training. Other measures to treat muscular imbalance include the use of a fascial roller to regulate fascial tension, massage techniques, electrotherapy to relax or as a support for strengthening, or tape systems to relieve overstressed structures, support painful structures and activate weak muscles.
