Naftidrofuryl is commercially available in tablet form (Praxilene). It has been approved in many countries since 1982.

Structure and properties

Naftidrofuryl (C24H33NO3, Mr = 383.5 g/mol) is present in drugs as naftidrofuryl hydrogen oxalate, a white powder that is readily soluble in water. It is a mixture of 4 stereoisomers.

Effects

Naftidrofuryl (ATC C04AX21) has vasodilator and antiplatelet properties. The effects are due to antagonism at 5HT2 receptors.

Indications

  • Arterial occlusive disease of the lower extremities, stage II (intermittent claudication).
  • Raynaud’s syndrome
  • Consequences of fresh cerebral ischemic disorders.
  • Diffuse circulatory insufficiency in the elderly, manifested by confusional states and mental behavioral disorders.
