Nasal Polyps (Polyposis Nasi): Complications

The following are the most important diseases or complications that may be contributed to by polyposis nasi (nasal polyps):

Respiratory system (J00-J99)

  • Bronchitis (inflammation of the mucous membrane of the bronchi).
  • Chronic sinusitis (inflammation of the sinuses) – here: Chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS; simultaneous inflammation of the nasal mucosa (“rhinitis”) and the mucosa of the paranasal sinuses/sinusitis) – defined as persistence of nasal obstruction (obstructed nasal breathing) and/or secretion problems > 12 weeks; possibly. accompanied by cough, facial pain or pressure and / or limitations of odorDefinition of CRS according to S2k guideline (see below): persistent symptoms > 12 weeks; here: with nasal polyps (CRScNP; English CRSwNP).
  • Laryngitis (laryngitis).
  • Pharyngitis (pharyngitis)

Eyes and eye appendages (H00-H59).

  • Eye pain
  • Orbital (“eye socket related”) complications (see below sinusitis (sinusitis)/consequential diseases).

Symptoms and abnormal clinical and laboratory findings not elsewhere classified (R00-R99).

  • Obstructed nasal breathing
  • Nasal bleeding (epistaxis) – here caused by destructive growing nasal polyps (rare).

Serious complications threaten if the sinusitis (sinusitis) spreads to surrounding tissue (see below sinusitis / sequelae).
