Nausea (Sickness): Medical History

Medical history (history of illness) represents an important component in the diagnosis of nausea (sickness).

Family history

  • Is there a history of frequent cardiovascular disease in your family?

Social history

  • What is your profession?
  • Is there any evidence of psychosocial stress or strain due to your family situation?

Current medical history/systemic history (somatic and psychological complaints).

  • When does the nausea occur?
    • Predominantly in the morning?
    • In connection with food intake?
  • Do other symptoms occur concomitantly?
    • Diarrhea?
    • Increased bowel sounds?
    • Abdomen* (abdomen) with pressure pain?
    • Nystagmus* (uncontrollable, rhythmic movements of the eyes)?

Vegetative anamnesis incl. nutritional anamnesis.

  • Do you eat a balanced diet?
  • Do you smoke? If so, how many cigarettes, cigars or pipes per day?
  • Do you drink alcohol? If yes, what drink(s) and how many glasses per day?
  • Do you use drugs? If yes, what drugs and how often per day or per week?

Self history incl. medication history.

  • Pre-existing conditions (diseases of the eyes / gastrointestinal tract / liver, gall bladder and bile ducts / pancreas / genitourinary system (kidneys, urinary tract – reproductive organs); cardiovascular diseases; diseases of the nervous system / psyche; infections; metabolic diseases, tumor diseases).
