Navel inflammation during pregnancy

In pregnancy, an inflammation of the navel is not uncommon. Due to the constant growth of the child in the abdomen, an increasing tension of the abdominal wall builds up, which can cause small skin cracks. Normally, such small wounds heal quickly and are often not even noticed, but due to the constant tension of the skin in the area of the abdomen during pregnancy as well as strong movements of the child, healing wounds can quickly reopen.

If bacteria then settle in the small wounds, inflammation can quickly develop. In many cases of an inflammation of the navel, itching, scaling, crusts, redness, weeping and a bad smell are described. As a self-therapy, it is possible to first clean the navel carefully with lukewarm water or chamomile and then let it dry in the air, because bacteria prefer a humid environment.

If there is still no improvement, it is recommended to contact a doctor. To prevent navel inflammation, extensive hygiene is particularly important. If there is tension in the area of the navel, mild, moisturizing, fragrance-free skin care creams can be used. Otherwise it is considered preventive to keep the navel always clean and dry.
