Neuroblastoma: Complications

The following are the most important diseases or complications that may be contributed to by neuroblastoma:

Neoplasms – Tumor Diseases (C00-D48).

  • Metastases (daughter tumors); especially:
    • Bone marrow
    • Bone
    • Liver
    • Skin
    • Lymph nodes
    • Brain
    • Lungs
    • Central nervous system (CNS)
  • Osteochondroma (benign bone tumor; associated with radiation therapy).
  • Tumor recurrence – recurrence of neuroblastoma.
  • Spontaneous tumor regression – especially when the tumor occurs in early infancy.

Prognostic factors

  • Alterations in genes of the RAS and p53 cancer signaling pathways were associated with an unfavorable disease course (approximately 18 percent of cases); however, spontaneous regression of the tumor could be demonstrated in some cases.Neuroblastoma has been shown to grow aggressively only when telomere lengthening mechanisms are present. Other factors leading to unfavorable disease progression include the presence of additional mutation in cancer signaling pathways
