Neurodermatitis of the eye

Introduction

Neurodermatitis of the eye is a chronic, mostly intermittent skin disease. It is characterized by itchy, frequently weeping eczema in acute phases and dry, brittle skin in intervals. The eyelid is one of the possible localizations of neurodermatitis. It can also occur on other parts of the face, on the head, on the extensor sides of the arms and legs and on the fingers.

Causes of neurodermatitis of the eye

The causes for neurodermatitis of the eye are the same as those for neurodermatitis in other parts of the body: On the one hand, there is a hereditary predisposition. Children whose parents suffer from neurodermatitis have an increased risk of also suffering from the skin disease. There are also various allergies that can trigger neurodermatitis.

For this count food allergies, for example against nuts, cow’s milk, eggs, Soja, fish or wheat in addition, allergies like the animal hair and house dust mite allergy. Among other things, the consumption of certain foods such as strawberries or tomatoes, but also heavy sweating and drying of the skin due to frequent contact with water and/or lack of moisturizing. Do you suffer from dry skin?

Diagnosis of neurodermatitis of the eye

The diagnosis of neurodermatitis of the eye can usually be made on the basis of the medical history and clinical appearance. Often there are relatives in the family who suffer or have suffered from neurodermatitis. During the examination, dry skin and, in the acute stage, red, sometimes weeping eczema are noticeable. Especially with children, it should be determined exactly whether neurodermatitis occurs more frequently after consumption of certain foods. In this case, a blood test for various food allergies can be useful.

Accompanying symptoms of neurodermatitis of the eye

One of the two most frequent accompanying symptoms of neurodermatitis of the eye is itching. It occurs particularly in acute attacks. A second very frequent accompanying symptom of neurodermatitis is dry skin in the interval, which requires regular care.

In addition, people with neurodermatitis often have small skin tears at the corners of the mouth or earlobes, known in technical jargon as rhagades. Itching is a very typical accompanying symptom of neurodermatitis. It is particularly distressing in the acute flare in which vesicular, weeping, highly red eczema spots appear.

However, itching can also occur in intervals due to the dry skin. Adequate skin care is therefore essential. Dark circles under the eyes are one of several stigmata, i.e. characteristics of neurodermatitis.

Why dark circles under the eyes occur more frequently in neurodermatitis has not yet been clarified. Also the thinning of the outer part of the eye folds (Hertoghe sign) and the double lower lid fold (Dennie-Morgan fold) are stigmata whose cause is still unclear. Often, due to the tormenting itching, the affected persons scratch the eczema areas against their will. This increases the irritation of the skin and also contributes to a swelling in the area of the eyes. Do you want to fight the swelling around the eyes?
