Nevus: Complications

The following are the most important diseases or complications that can be caused by nevi:

Neoplasms – Tumor diseases (C00-D48).

  • Basal cell carcinoma (BCC; basal cell carcinoma) – from a sebaceous nevus (nevus sebaceus).
  • Malignant melanoma (black skin cancer) – from a dysplastic nevus.
  • Squamous cell carcinoma of the skin – malignant (malignant) neoplasm of the skin – from the sebaceous nevus.
  • Tumors of any type – the more nevi, the higher the risk of tumors of any type for women; evaluation of both Nurses’ Health Studies (NHS and NHS 2) showed with pooled data from both studies:
    • 1-5 nevi: 6% higher risk of cancer than among women without moles.
    • 6-14 nevi: 8%
    • ≥ 15 nevi: 19 %

The most common tumor was breast carcinoma (breast cancer).Note: Cutaneous nevi are associated with prolonged telomeres; particularly long telomeres correlated with increased cancer risk in numerous studies.
