Nifurtimox (C₁₀H₁₃N₃O₅S, M_r = 287.3 g/mol) is a nitrofuran derivative.

Effects

Nifurtimox (ATC P01CC01) has antiparasitic properties. The effects are due to the formation of free radicals.

Indications

• For the treatment of Chagas disease, a parasitic disease also known as South American trypanosomiasis, caused by the protozoan.
• For the treatment of African trypanosomiasis.

Adverse effects

Possible adverse effects include:

• Gastrointestinal discomfort
• Peripheral neuropathy
• Central disorders
• Skin rashes
