The term “lump” in the breast refers to a thickening of the breast gland tissue. This can occur in various shapes, sizes and consistencies, mostly in women, but also in men. A palpable lump in the breast is no proof of the presence of breast cancer.

It can also have many other rather harmless causes, such as mastopathy (benign changes in the breast gland tissue), fibroadenoma (benign tumour), cysts or benign breast swelling. It is therefore advisable not to develop a premature panic, but to consult a doctor as soon as possible in order to rule out a malignant disease of the breast or, if necessary, to initiate therapy early on.
