Nodule: Symptoms, Complaints, Signs

The following symptoms and complaints may indicate a nodule (small nodule) or nodules:

Leading symptoms

  • Solid, circumscribed skin elevation:
    • Nodule (nodule; pl: noduli): circumscribed tissue consolidation protruding into or above the skin 0.5-1.0 cm
    • Nodus (nodule; pl: nodi): circumscribed in or above the skin protruding tissue consolidation > 1.0 cm

Warning signs (red flags)

  • Middle-aged or elderly patients + occurrence of disseminated skin nodules (seeding of skin nodules) + symptoms such as fatigue → think of: Tumor disease
  • Non-healing lesion on a sun-exposed part of the body + elderly patients → think of: Basal cell carcinoma (BCC; basal cell carcinoma) or squamous cell carcinoma of the skin.
  • If a node develops in a nevus / mole → think of: malignant melanoma (black skin cancer).
  • Nodules + pruritus (itching) + night sweats (night sweats) → think of: Lymphoma
