Nonoxinol 9 is found in or on topical chemical contraceptives such as condoms, diaphragms, suppositories, foams, and creams.

Structure and properties

Nonoxinol 9 (C33H60O10, Mr = 616.8 g/mol) is a mixture consisting mainly of monononylphenyl ethers of macrogols and having the formula C9H19C6H4-(OCH2-CH2)n-OH, where the average value is for about 9. Nonoxinol 9 may contain free macrogols. It exists as a clear, colorless to pale yellow, viscous liquid that is miscible with water.

Effects

Nonoxinol 9 has spermicidal properties. According to our research, it is insufficiently effective to be used as a sole contraceptive. It also does not provide sufficient protection against sexually transmitted diseases. On the contrary, it has been shown to even increase the risk of HIV transmission when used frequently.

Indications for use

As a chemical contraceptive.

Contraindications

Nonoxinol 9 should not be used in case of hypersensitivity or intolerance, vaginal bleeding, and inflammation of the vagina and cervix. For complete precautions, see the Instructions for Use.

Interactions

There are no known interactions, but as a precaution, no other topical agents should be used at the same time. Condoms may be used at the same time.

Adverse effects

Possible adverse effects include local irritation and reactions of the skin and mucous membranes, for example, sensation of discomfort, warmth, irritation, soreness, discharge, dryness, or burning.
