Noroviruses

The norovirus is also one of the typical viral pathogens of diarrhoea. The viruses are transmitted via smear and contact infections and thus spread particularly quickly, especially in community facilities. Therefore, in addition to children (kindergarten and school), older people who live in old people’s homes or are hospitalized for a certain period of time are particularly at risk of becoming infected with the Norovirus.

In addition, these two age groups are most severely affected by the complications of diarrhoea, as they have difficulty compensating for the dehydration caused by the many fluid losses in the bowel movements. The norovirus is one of the highly infectious viral diseases, the infection usually occurs when an affected person has symptoms and passes on the virus. The symptoms consist of nausea and vomiting together with severe diarrhoea.

Abdominal pain or cramps can also occur. The loss of fluid also causes headaches. Fever, on the other hand, is rather a rare symptom of Norovirus infection.

The symptoms usually disappear within one to two days. If a norovirus infection is suspected, the pathogen can be detected in stool samples. Especially in severe cases, the fluid balance of the affected person as well as the blood salts (electrolytes) should be monitored.

The therapy consists of a sufficient drinking quantity. If this cannot be achieved, additional fluid may have to be given via the vein. The electrolytes should also be balanced with sugared tea and salty broth. If necessary, this balance can also be achieved by an infusion into the vein. Would you like to know whether you have been infected with the Norovirus?

Campylobacter

Salmonellae also belong to the group of bacterial pathogens, which primarily cause inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract and thus lead to diarrhoea. Salmonella is also infected via contaminated food such as eggs, poultry and milk. The bacteria can be killed by heating the food sufficiently.

However, salmonellae have a special feature: they cannot be killed by cold and thus also by freezing the food alone. You have diarrhoea and would like to know what else you should eat now? However, a small amount of Salmonella does not always lead to infection, often a larger number of bacteria is needed to cause diarrhoea caused by Salmonella.

Typically, salmonellosis (disease with salmonella) causes flu-like symptoms and diarrhea. Usually the diarrhoea is watery, occasionally it can look bloody. As with most diarrheal diseases, the therapy consists of a sufficient supply of fluid and electrolytes.

In severe cases, antibiotics such as fluoroquinolones and cephalosporins can be given.
