Nose hair

Nose hairs are the hairs that grow out of the nose from the inside. They are relatively thick compared to hair on the upper arm or legs and are dark brown to black in most people. Nose hairs only grow a few centimeters long, but can grow out of the nostril, especially in older people.

This is considered by many to be unaesthetic and is a sign of poor personal hygiene. Although nose hairs are generally perceived as disturbing, they have an important function in breathing. Nose hairs block larger particles of dirt and dust as they enter the airways, thus protecting the windpipe and lungs from foreign bodies.

Also smaller creatures, such as insects or arachnids, which would like to enter the nose at night, for example, are hindered by the nose hairs. If larger foreign particles reach the airways, the body normally reacts with a coughing attack. So it tries to get rid of the foreign material.

If people no longer have a cough reflex, for example due to serious illness or unconsciousness, any foreign body can lead to inflammation and infection of the respiratory tract, which unfortunately is rarely a banal occurrence. Therefore, before a nasal hair removal, one should consider whether one wants to do without a natural barrier of the respiratory tract. However, young and healthy people should not worry too much about endangering their health by nasal hair removal, because the cough reflex, the cilia of the windpipe as well as the body’s immune system are much more important for an effective defense.

How to remove nose hair

Many people want to remove their nose hairs when they become visible outside the nostril. One reason for this is that too long nose hairs are generally considered unkempt and unaesthetic. There are many different ways to remove the nose hairs.

Firstly, the nose hair can be completely removed by plucking or pulling it out with tweezers. However, this type of nose hair removal is very painful and also not entirely unhealthy. On the other hand, the nose hairs can be shortened until they are no longer visible.

This can be done with a nose hair cutter or trimmer. A big advantage of this method is the easy practicability and the freedom from pain. In addition, cutting the nose hair is not so traumatic for the nasal mucous membrane compared to pulling the hair out.

The only disadvantage would be that the nose hairs have to be trimmed more often than if they are removed completely. Cosmeticians and also doctors can also perform permanent removal of the nose hairs. In this procedure, the nasal mucous membrane is treated with a laser in several sessions.

As a result, the hair roots are destroyed and cannot regenerate. The consequence is a lifelong lack of growth of the nose hairs. However, this method is quite complex and expensive, which is why it should be thoroughly considered whether the effort and expected goal are in a good relationship.

In summary, the removal of nose hair is a purely aesthetic problem and by no means a medical one. The plucking or pulling out of the nose hairs is considered obsolete and is no longer performed due to the above mentioned disadvantages. Permanent removal of nose hairs by laser is not yet widespread.

Reasons for this are certainly the price and the complex procedure. The currently best method to remove the nose hairs reliably and without danger is trimming. With specially made nose hair trimmers, nose hairs can be easily shortened in a few seconds.

Alternatively, the nose hairs can also be cut with special nose scissors or a common nail scissors. Here, however, caution is required so that you do not cut your nose mucous membrane and make it bleed. Long and visible nose hairs are generally considered unaesthetic and are therefore often removed or shortened until they are no longer visible.

When plucking or pulling out the nose hairs, tweezers are often used to pull the individual hairs out of the nasal mucosa with a strong jerk. This is generally felt to be very painful and unpleasant, especially since everyone has a large number of hairs in their nose. In general, this method of nasal hair removal is rarely used anymore.

Not only because of the strong pain, but also because of the injuries of the nasal mucous membrane, which are caused by the strong pulling of the nasal hairs. Due to the pulling, small tears and sometimes even open wounds in the nose occur, which can also bleed. Every open wound in or on the human body is at risk of inflammation as part of an infection or wound healing disorders. This leads to scarring and thus to destruction of the nasal mucosa.

This damage is irreversible and should not be taken lightly. Scars exert a pull on the tissue so that deformations can occur. These can impede breathing and also lead to snoring at night.

It should also be noted that it is a misconception that torn out hairs do not grow back. Although the hair root needs a little longer to regenerate, the hair grows back after a few weeks. So it is pointless to want to remove the nose hairs permanently by plucking.

In summary, the principle of plucking or pulling out the nose hairs should no longer be used, since there are now less painful and healthier methods. These include cutting or trimming the nose hairs. Although you have to use a trimmer more often than tweezers, the advantages of the less painful method outweigh the disadvantages considerably.

In addition to plucking and pulling out, cutting or trimming is a sensible way to shorten. Cutting can be done with a special nose scissors or a common nail scissors. The scissors are inserted carefully into the noses and the individual hairs are cut off with the tip of the scissors.

In comparison to superficial hair on the body, it is not necessary to ensure that the nose hairs are of an even length, as they cannot be seen from the outside anyway. The only important thing is that hairs that are too long and grow beyond the nose opening are cut off in such a way that they are no longer visible. When cutting with scissors, however, should always be very careful to avoid damaging the mucous membrane of the nose by carelessness.

This results in an open wound in the area of the nasal mucosa which bleeds and can potentially become inflamed. For this reason, nowadays it is more common to use a specially made nose hair trimmer. This is constructed in such a way that it fits perfectly into the nostril opening and shortens the hair with small blades.

Injuries to the nasal mucosa are rather rare and not to be expected due to safety precautions on the trimmer. The process itself takes only a few seconds and can be easily integrated into the morning body care routine. Overall, cutting or trimming the hair is definitely preferable to the entire removal of the nose hairs by pulling them out.

The shortening is painless and health risks do not occur with careful procedure. The only disadvantage is that nose hairs are shortened more often than they have to be removed. This means that older people in particular have to use a trimmer every week to keep the nose hairs at the right length. Young people usually have less problems with too long nose hairs, which is why the trimming is only done as needed.
