Novminsulfone (Novalgin®): Dangerous Side Effects

The most common side effects of novaminsulfone include nausea and vomiting, as well as a slight red coloration of the urine. In addition, circulatory fluctuations may also occur. Very rarely, skin changes, confusion, and clouding of consciousness may also occur. However, if novaminsulfone is taken continuously, the painkiller can also cause organ damage, especially to the kidneys.

Side effects of novalgin

Novalgin occasional side effects

Are a purple to red, sometimes blistered rash and a drop in blood pressure. The risk of a drop in blood pressure may be increased with extremely high fever. Typical signs of a drop in blood pressure are:

  • Heart palpitations
  • Paleness
  • Trembling
  • Nausea
  • Dizziness and fainting

Rare side effects of Novalgin

Rare side effects primarily include hypersensitivity reactions. These can occur even after several times of problem-free use and can be life-threatening. Signs of a mild hypersensitivity reaction are:

  • Eye burning
  • Coughing, sneezing, runny nose
  • A feeling of tightness in the chest
  • Redness of the skin (especially on the face)
  • Hives
  • Nausea and abdominal cramps
  • A burning, itching and hot sensation on and under the tongue and especially on the palms of the hands and soles of the feet

Mild reactions may possibly progress to a severe hypersensitivity reaction, causing severe hives, swelling, spasmodic constriction of the airways, cardiac arrhythmias, hypotension and circulatory shock. Another rare side effect of Novalgin.

Is a decreased white blood cell count. Very rarely, an asthma attack, acute deterioration of kidney function to renal failure, and extensive blistering of the skin (Stevens-Johnson syndrome) may also occur.

Novamine sulfone: beware of allergic reactions.

In rare cases, taking novaminsulfone may cause a hypersensitivity reaction and subsequent shock. In the worst case, this side effect can have fatal consequences. In the case of pre-existing conditions such as bronchial asthma or hay fever, an attack can also be triggered by taking novaminsulfone. This side effect occurs primarily when novaminsulfone is injected too quickly. Then a critical drop in blood pressure can also occur. Compared to other painkillers, however, the fact that Novaminsulfone is very well tolerated by the stomach is a positive aspect. In addition, there is no addiction potential, as exists, for example, with opioids.

Agranulocytosis as a severe side effect.

Very rarely, taking novaminsulfone can cause damage to cell formation in the bone marrow (agranulocytosis). Granulocytes – a subtype of leukocytes – are formed in the bone marrow. Typical symptoms of agranulocytosis are initially fever and chills. Over time, the inflammation can spread to the entire body and sepsis can result. If novaminsulfone is discontinued after the onset of symptoms and the damage is treated appropriately, the damage is usually reversible. However, if the painkiller continues to be taken, the mortality rate is about ten percent. The risk for agranulocytosis is particularly high with intravenous administration of novaminsulfone.

Disagreement on frequency of side effects

How often this serious side effect actually occurs is controversial among scientists. While some studies assume a probability of about 1:1,000,000, other studies estimate the risk to be much higher at 1:1,439. The different results are probably due, among other things, to different doses as well as different lengths of time the drug was taken.

Novamine sulfone: banned in some countries

Because of its dangerous side effects, the administration of novaminsulfone is not permitted in some countries, such as England, Japan, Denmark, Sweden, or the United States. In Germany, on the other hand, its use is permitted. However, novaminsulfone is usually used only for short-term treatments and only for certain applications. For example, the German Federal Institute for Drugs and Medical Devices recommends taking novaminsulfone only to treat severe pain or in situations where other medications do not work. Patients taking novaminsulfone should have regular blood work done and should contact their treating physician directly if they develop an infection.
