Number of hairs | Epilating without pain

Number of hairs

Epilating is one of many ways to remove body hair in various places. In this procedure not only the visible part, but the entire hair including its root is plucked out. If one imagines that the hair is practically torn out of the skin, it is understandable that this method of hair removal is thought to be relatively painful.

To a certain extent, this also corresponds to reality. However, it is important to know that the perceived pain during depilation depends on several factors: The most important factor is the number of hairs that are removed at once. The more hairs you pluck out at once, the more the discomfort increases.

You can counteract this fact by using an epilator with a tweezer system that contains as few tweezers as possible, ideally only one tweezer per row, because then only one hair is removed at a time. The properties of the hair also have a great influence on the sensation of pain: the longer the hair is, the more painful its removal is. Ideal for epilation is a hair length between 2 and 5 mm, the hairs should not be too short, so that the epilator can grip well.

For this purpose, you should shave the hairs about a week before an epilation or trim the hairs directly before (some epilators even have a built-in trimmer). The condition of the hair also affects the pain during epilation. The thinner and softer a hair is, the less painful its removal usually is.

Another way to perform epilation with less pain is to massage the skin. It is best to massage the skin before and after epilation. It stimulates and activates the skin and improves blood circulation, which prevents pain.

Some epilators are equipped with a massage system. For some, it also helps to alleviate pain by cooling. For this purpose, some epilators also have a cooling attachment which can be placed in the freezer before use.
