Numbness on the lip

Introduction

A numbness on the lip is a sensitivity disorder. The sensitive nerve endings in the skin have problems to perceive sensory stimuli in the lip area and transmit them to the central nervous system (the brain). A numbness is therefore a neurological disorder. It can have various causes. In most cases, however, it is short-lived and disappears by itself without special treatment.

The possible causes

There are many causes for numbness in the lip. The numbness is a nervous disorder. Somewhere along its course from the skin to the central nervous system, these nerves are damaged.

This can be in the immediate vicinity of the skin area to be treated, i.e. the lip. Then, for example, inflammation in the area of the paranasal sinuses or the teeth is the cause. Even after a local anesthesia at the dentist, numbness can occur on the lip.

This is desired to a certain extent: in this way the patient is relaxed and the dentist can treat without pain. However, the numbness should disappear after a few hours. Besides harmless causes, the numbness can also be caused by damage to the brain, as is the case with a stroke.

Sinusitis can also cause a disturbance of sensation in the lip area. The nerve that innervates the skin in this area sometimes runs in very close proximity to the sinuses. If these are inflamed, the inflammation can also spread to the nerve and damage it.

A numbness in the area of the lip is the result. For this reason, you should consult an ear, nose and throat specialist if you have the corresponding symptoms. Toothache can also be accompanied by numbness in the lip area.

If there is an inflammation in the area of the teeth this leads to pain. If the inflammation also spreads to the surrounding area, nerves located in this area may be damaged. They can then no longer perform their function of transmitting stimuli without restriction.

The area that they originally serve, i.e. the skin on the lip, appears “numb” to the patient because the brain no longer receives any emotional stimuli from this part. You can find more information about toothache here. A whiteness tooth surgery is usually performed with local anesthesia.

A numbness in the area of the lip is initially normal and important after the injection so that the dentist can remove the whiteth teeth without pain. However, the numbness should disappear after a few hours. If this is not the case there are several possibilities.

It is possible that a nerve was injured during the operation or that an inflammation spreads in the area of the operation after the operation. Therefore, if you feel numbness on your lip after whitetooth surgery, you should definitely see the doctor who performed the surgery again. Apart from harmless causes, a numbness of the lip can always be an indication of a stroke.

This depends mainly on the accompanying symptoms. Alarm signs are numbness that occurs together with speech or vision problems or those that spread to a complete side of the body in addition to the lip. Sudden paralysis and severe headaches are also warm signals. Since numbness is a nervous disorder, it should never be taken lightly. Often the causes are harmless, but since a stroke can also be behind it, it is important to consult a doctor.
