Nutrition after surgery | Operation of a gastric bypass – You should be aware of this!

Nutrition after surgery

After the gastric bypass operation, a change in diet is necessary, which should take place in phases.

  • Even during the hospital stay after the operation, the diet is gradually rebuilt, starting with fluid intake (tea, water, soups) and then yoghurt products.
  • Even in the second to fourth week after the surgery, solid food should still be avoided, and the diet is also limited to liquid and porous food (e.g. pureed food). It is important to make sure that the diet is as low in fat and sugar as possible, carbohydrate and carbonated drinks should also be avoided.
  • From the fourth week onwards, you can gradually start on a solid diet, which should contain mainly protein-rich, low-fiber products (e.g. chicken, fish).
  • Smaller meals should rather be eaten, since the capacity of the reduced stomach is clearly smaller.
  • The simultaneous intake of liquids and solid food must also be avoided, as well as products with a high sugar content, since all this can cause the food to pass through the gastrointestinal tract too quickly and thus cause digestive problems.
  • After an individually long habituation phase to the solid food the lifelong nourishing conversion in the connection arranges itself similarly: small meals, at least 3 per day, balanced mixed food, protein-rich and fat, sugar and fiber-poor, beverages without sugar and carbonic acid, alcohol avoid.
  • Due to the altered gastrointestinal passage of food, vitamins and nutrients can also be altered or poorly absorbed, so that a lifelong intake of food supplements is usually necessary to avoid deficiency symptoms.

It is difficult to give an exact cost estimate for the gastric bypass operation, as the costs can vary considerably in different clinics. On average, however, one speaks of amounts between 6. 500€ and 15.

000€. The costs for the gastric bypass operation are covered by the patient’s health insurance company. However, since this is not a regular assumption of costs, an application for assumption of costs must be submitted to the health insurance company in advance. For this purpose, it must be clarified whether certain conditions are met, e.g. : The application can be worked out together with the family doctor or with a doctor from the selected obesity center and should then be handed in personally to the relevant health insurance administrator.
