Nutrition example

Especially on the day of chemotherapy it is recommended to have a good breakfast. Easily digestible foods such as oatmeal are a good basis. One or two days after the therapy, you should avoid intensively tasting foods or favorite dishes, because the taste buds may be disturbed and tastes may be perceived differently.

As a rule, everyone finds out for themselves which dishes are particularly good for you, whether it is simple spaghetti with tomato sauce or potatoes in their skin with herb curd. If you are very nauseous, you can also act as if you have a gastrointestinal infection and resort to soups, tea and rusks. Despite nausea, however, you should try to meet your daily calorie requirements in order not to lose any more weight.

High-calorie shakes from the pharmacy or self-mixed shakes (e.g. raspberry yoghurt honey shakes or similar) can help. On days when you have a good appetite, you can indulge in this and feast to your heart‘s content. In order to cover the calorie requirement, in addition to the three main meals in the morning and afternoon, snacks between meals can also be taken, for example fruit salad or some cheese and grapes or cake and tea. The well-being of the patient is the main focus during the time of illness.

General tips

In summary, it must be repeated that nutrition should be a supportive measure in cancer and not an independent therapeutic option. Therefore, drastic changes or independent taking of preparations should always be discussed with the treating physician/oncologist. Most oncological outpatient clinics and practices usually have a nutritionist on hand who can give helpful tips.

The time during cancer therapy is often difficult and can be marked by nausea and loss of appetite. Especially then it is important to eat what you feel like eating. The main thing is to eat at all and not lose weight.

It is worthwhile for example with milk, cheese, bread and eggs to fall back on organic products to avoid unnecessary and stressful additives. Caution is required with vitamin preparations. They should not be taken on their own, as they can endanger the success of the therapy. In addition to the diet, a lot of exercise is also extremely important during a cancer disease! Half an hour to an hour of walking in the fresh air, cycling, yoga and other light sports activities every day have a clearly positive effect on both the state of health and the prognosis of cancer.
