Nux Vomica Effects and Side Effects

Stem plant

Loganiaceae, nux vomica.

Medicinal drug

Strychni semen (Nux vomica) – Nux vomica: the seed of L. (PH 4) – no longer officinal.

Preparations

The old pharmacopoeias contained some preparations, e.g. Tinctura Strychni and Extractum Strychni.

Ingredients

Indole alkaloids – bitter substances: strychnine, brucine.

Effects

Indications for use

Today practically exclusively in alternative medicine, in homeopathy for nausea and vomiting. In the past, among other things, as a bitter remedy and tonic, but not recommended due to high toxicity.

Adverse effects

Toxic. Nux vomica alkaloids such as strychnine act on the central system as a convulsant. Strychnine antagonizes the inhibitory neurotransmitter glycine, thus increasing convulsiveness.
