Nystatin as mouthwash

Nystatin mouthwash is used to treat fungal infections in the mouth. Oral thrush (infection in the mouth and throat area with Candida albicans) occurs mainly in patients undergoing chemotherapy. The mouth should be rinsed extensively with nystatin solution or suspension after each meal to remove the fungus from the oral cavity.

One should take care to keep the solution in the mouth for a longer time and not swallow it immediately. This way the solution can get into all corners of the mouth and reach the fungal spores everywhere. The solution can then be swallowed and is no longer harmful to the body.

The swallowed mouthwash can even help to treat the oesophagus and damage the yeasts that live there. Usually the therapy takes up to four weeks. In severe individual cases, it may be necessary to continue the therapy longer.

Nystatin in the form of lozenges

The therapy with the mouthwash is supplemented with the lozenges. The digestive tract begins with the mouth and ends with the intestine. All stations of this digestive tract should be reached in order to eliminate the fungal infection completely.

The fungal infection in the oral cavity and esophagus is treated by thorough rinsing with the Nystatin solution. To reach the gastrointestinal tract, tablets taken three times a day for a week (2 tablets 3 times a day) are suitable. In the further course of the treatment the dose is then reduced to one tablet three times a day.

In total, this therapy should also be carried out over 4 weeks. It is recommended that the therapy be carried out under the supervision of a doctor who can assess and monitor the progress of the therapy to prevent complications and further spread.
