Oats: Applications and Uses

Oat herb and oat fruit are used only folk medicine, the two drugs were negatively evaluated by the E Commission. Traditionally, the oat herb is said to have a tonic effect, so its use for general improvement of the condition can be advocated.

For all other areas of application, the effectiveness of the drug has not yet been proven and further studies must follow. Due to this situation, there is currently also no approved finished drug with a defined indication on the market.

Oat straw: indications for use

Oat straw has anti-inflammatory effects and can therefore be taken for inflammatory skin diseases with itching, as well as supportively for atopic dermatitis. This drug has been positively evaluated by Commission E.

In folk medicine, in addition to being used as a sedative, oat straw is also used for gout, rheumatism, paralysis and liver disease.

Application of oat herb

Folk medicine uses tea made from green oat herb as a calming agent in cases of nervous weakness, nervous exhaustion, insomnia and acute feelings of anxiety and tension. Since oat herb is also said to lower the uric acid level in the blood, the drug is used to support rheumatism and gout therapy.

Furthermore, oat herb is used as a diuretic in flushing therapies, for bladder weakness, as a restorative and tonic, and for various skin diseases. In combination with other herbal remedies, oat herb preparations are also used for cardiovascular and respiratory ailments, metabolic diseases and aging disorders.

However, the above-mentioned indications could not yet be assigned to any ingredients of oats and are therefore not scientifically substantiated.

Oats in homeopathy

In homeopathy, the whole, fresh plant is used at the time of lactic ripeness of the fruits in anthroposophically oriented therapy. Furthermore, the fresh above-ground parts of the plant collected at flowering time are used to treat insomnia and states of exhaustion.

Ingredients of oat herb

Carbohydrates and besides flavonoids, flavonolignans, steroid saponins A and B, vitamins and minerals such as silicic acid, iron, manganese and zinc are found in oat herb. Also of importance is probably the indole alkaloid gramin. Oat straw contains silica, flavonoids and triterpene saponins.
