Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome: Medical History

Medical history (history of illness) represents an important component in the diagnosis of obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS).

Social anamnesis

Current anamnesis/systemic anamnesis (somatic and psychological complaints) [extraneous anamnesis: partner].

  • Has your bed partner noticed loud and irregular snoring?
  • Has your bed partner noticed breathing pauses during sleep on your end?
  • Do you startle from sleep at night?
  • Do you awaken from sleep with a feeling of suffocation?
  • Are you very tired during the day and fall asleep in between?
  • Have you noticed a decrease in performance?
  • Are you unfocused during the day?
  • Have you noticed a decrease in sexual desire?
  • Do you have erectile dysfunction? (Question for the man)

Vegetative anamnesis including nutritional anamnesis.

  • Are you overweight? Please tell us your body weight (in kg) and height (in cm).
  • Do you like to sleep in the supine position?
  • Do you eat a balanced diet?
  • Do you drink alcohol? If so, what drink(s) and how many glasses per day?
  • Do you use drugs? If yes, what drugs and how often per day or per week?
