Structure and properties
Olsalazine (C14H10N2O6, Mr = 302.2 g/mol) exists as a yellow, fine, crystalline powder that is sparingly soluble in water.
Effects
Olsalazine (ATC A07EC03) has anti-inflammatory properties. It is a prodrug. Olsalazine is broken down by colon bacteria into its active component 5-aminosalicylic acid (= mesalazine). The therapeutic effect of 5-ASA is based on the local action of a high concentration of active ingredient on the inflamed intestinal mucosa.

For the treatment of ulcerative colitis.
