OP Indications | Torn rotator cuff – physiotherapy, exercises and healing

OP Indications

An operation is necessary if: How exactly the surgical technique is performed depends on the extent of the tear and on the surgeon himself. In most cases, surgery is avoided if the fibers are still complete.

  • The fibers of the tendon are torn off so far that an independent growing together is no longer foreseeable.
  • Likewise, a surgical indication is a young age with physical work, where it can lead to a complete tear of the tendon at any time.
  • If there is an inflammation of the bursa and the acromion is too steep, which constantly irritates the tendon and the fibers continue to become thinner, an arthroscopic operation is performed. The tendon is not worked on, but the bursa is removed and the acromion is milled off so that the tendon has more space.

How long am I on sick leave?

How long the sick leave lasts depends on the treatment, the symptoms and the type of work. The article “Pain/symptoms of a rotator cuff rupture” might be of interest to you in this regard.

  • If the activity is purely physical and involves a lot of arm activity, you will be put on sick leave for 2-3 weeks immediately after a tear in the rotator cuff, as the arm can only be loaded with pain.

During this time, the extent of the injury will be determined by examination.

  • If surgery is required, the duration of the sick leave will probably exceed 6 weeks.
  • If a conservative therapy method is sufficient, the work can be continued after the acute pain has subsided and mobility has improved. However, if the symptoms worsen, a doctor should be consulted immediately.
  • For less arm-straining activities, sick leave also depends on the pain. However, this is cancelled much faster.
  • In case of extreme physical work or competitive sports, the duration of the sick leave cannot be foreseen and depends on the course of healing. In the worst case, the sick leave would last up to half a year, as the ability to work under pressure is only then restored.
