Operation of a lipoma of the shoulder

The shoulder is a frequent site of lipoma. In about twelve percent of cases, lipoma occurs at the shoulder. In the shoulder area, the shoulder blade is a predestined site.

Since there are many joints in the shoulder area, it can often cause disorders there, which is why surgical removal is usually advisable. Likewise, the carrying of bags/rucksacks in the shoulder area often causes friction, which is why lipoma can also be disturbing. Cosmetic reasons for a lipoma removal are also often in the foreground in the shoulder area.

Cost of Lipoma Removal

If the removal of the lipoma is medically indicated, for example if the lipoma presses on a nerve, then the costs are covered by the respective health insurance company. If, however, the removal is performed for purely cosmetic reasons, the costs must be covered by the patient himself. The costs amount to approximately 140€ per lipoma. The costs also depend on whether the operation is performed under local or general anesthesia.

Does the health insurance pay for the lipoma removal?

It is not possible to say with certainty whether every health insurance company will cover the costs of removing a lipoma. However, the stronger the need for removal, the better the chances are. If, for example, the lipoma causes further discomfort because it may be pressing on a nerve, thereby limiting the feeling or even movement of a body part, there is a clear indication for treatment. However, since lipomas can also be very inconspicuous and harmless, it is possible that health insurance will not cover the costs.

Healing

The healing process after an operation is relatively uncomplicated and short. It is a small procedure that requires only a small incision, which means that the organism is not affected and the healing process is completed very quickly. If signs of inflammation such as fever, redness, swelling or pain in the area of the wound are noticed, a doctor should be consulted.

Nowadays, it is possible to remove even large lipomas through very small skin incisions. The smaller the incision, the better the skin heals. How the scar looks like after such an incision depends on the size and especially on the location of the incision.

In general, a more beautiful cosmetic result can be achieved if the doctor has the possibility to cut along the so-called skin cleft lines. However, every person is different in the way scars are formed. Thus, the results of the same procedure can look different in different people.
