Optomap Laser Scanner

The Optomap laser scanner is used in ophthalmology for diagnostic purposes. With this device, the retina can be visualized in great detail even through the narrow pupil.

Indications (areas of application)

  • Optic nerve damage
  • Damage to the blood vessels supplying the retina, such as occurs with diabetes mellitus and hypertension (high blood pressure)
  • Changes in the macula lutea – point of sharpest vision, such as occurs in macular degeneration.
  • Changes in the retina such as retinal detachment, which can be degenerative or due to tumors or injury
  • Inflammation in the eye such as retinitis (retinitis).
  • Tumors in the eye

The procedure

This device is an ultra-widefield laser scanner that takes images of the retina at a very high resolution. Unlike conventional ophthalmoscopy, the pupil does not need to be dilated before the examination, meaning that no medication needs to be placed on the eye to dilate the pupil.

Examination of the retina with this laser scanning method is a non-stressful diagnostic procedure that can be performed without much effort and provide important information in cases of visual disorders.
