Origin | Inflammation of a wound

Origin

Once the first barrier of the human body, the skin, is broken through an injury, germs such as fungi and bacteria can penetrate our body without any problems. But also foreign material such as soil or dust can settle in these open wounds. In the case of foreign material, the body first tries to render it harmless.

The macrophages of the body try to take up the small particles of the foreign material and then destroy them. In order for the macrophages to be able to reach the wound easily, this area of the body must be particularly well supplied with blood. This is how the reddening of the surrounding tissue comes about.

Pus is caused by a group of cells that belong to the human immune system and can die during an inflammation. These cells are called neutrophil granulocytes. The neutrophil granulocytes have a large number of different enzymes that can decompose invading bacteria and foreign substances.

After an operation a possible complication is an inflammation of the surgical wound. There is a certain risk of this with every operation. To keep this risk as low as possible, an operation is performed under sterile conditions.

However, wound healing disorders can occur and are favored by factors such as smoking or pre-existing conditions such as diabetes mellitus. Other risk factors for a wound healing disorder are old age, poor blood circulation or wound care and the use of certain medications. Signs of an inflammation of a surgical wound are pain at the wound, redness, swelling or fever.

Pus is also a sign of inflammation or infection. In order to minimize the risk of inflammation of a wound after an operation, the wound should be treated gently during the prescribed period and sweat-inducing sports should be avoided. Full baths or showers must also be avoided for a certain period of time after some operations.

An inflammation makes special wound care necessary. The removal of wisdom teeth is a routine dental procedure that is performed every day in Germany. Usually the wounds heal well and without complications after the removal of the wisdom tooth. However, it can also happen that an inflammation occurs.

Usually, the inflammation becomes noticeable by the fact that the pain does not get better and the swelling does not decrease as desired. Redness in the cheek area and fever are also signs of inflammation. To avoid inflammation, one should pay attention to a few things after the removal of the wisdom tooth.

Sports and sweaty activities should be avoided for about 14 days. The consumption of tobacco, coffee, alcohol and energy drinks should also be avoided. Dental care can be carried out as usual, leaving out the affected area. Solid and crumbly food should be avoided for a few days after the operation.
