Ornithosis: Test and Diagnosis

1st order laboratory parameters – obligatory laboratory tests.

  • Pathogen detection by PCR (polymerase chain reaction) from respiratory tract specimens (special laboratory).
  • Antibody detection (Chlamydophila psittaci antibodies) in serum by microimmunofluorescence test.

Direct or indirect detection of Chlamydia psittaci must be reported by name if the evidence indicates acute infection (Act on the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases in Humans).

2nd order laboratory parameters – depending on the results of the history, physical examination and obligatory laboratory parameters – for differential diagnostic clarification.

  • Pathogen culture (only in the special laboratory).
  • Small blood count
  • Inflammatory parameter – CRP (C-reactive protein)
  • Blood gas analysis (BGA)
  • Liver parameters – alanine aminotransferase (ALT, GPT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST, GOT), glutamate dehydrogenase (GLDH) and gamma-glutamyl transferase (gamma-GT, GGT).
  • Renal parameters – urea, creatinine, cystatin C if necessary.
  • Coagulation parameters – Quick, INR, PTT.
  • Blood cultures
