Orthopedic – sports medicine part

Another important pillar of a sports medical examination is an orthopedic-sportmedical part. This part of the examination is largely based on an optical method in which the body is first viewed from the front. Then an inspection from both sides is continued in order to get a good assessment of the body statics and the posture of the athlete. Possible postural deformities are detected and can usually be corrected by intervention and measures. In the rear view, the position of the spine, a possible oblique position and the leg axis and course of the legs are especially taken into consideration.

Muscle function tests

Following the optical means of a sports medical examination, the muscle function tests take place. These examination methods can detect shortening and weakening of certain muscle groups. The muscle function tests begin in a supine position and continue in a prone position until the examination ends in a knee-hand-support position.

General at the end

After all examinations, a sports medical diagnosis is finally made, which in the best case certifies the fitness for sports. In some cases, further examination appointments have to be made on the basis of the examination in order to clarify abnormalities and to initiate possible therapeutic measures. Verbal advice and recommendations are usually given by the doctor, even if the findings are in order.

Sports medical examinations should be carried out once a year in the case of regular sports activities. Unfortunately, many athletes are unaware of this and therefore rarely, if ever, go to a sports physician for a check-up. A short check once a year can make an enormous contribution to our health and protect us from diseases and injuries.

Until now, the costs of a sports medical examination had to be paid by the athletes themselves. Since such an examination can also cost up to 259€, many athletes were deterred by the costs and continued to do sports without being examined. However, there is a change in the sense that many health insurance companies are now rethinking and subsidizing the sports medical examination or even take over it completely, since it was recognized that this examination can contribute to a healthier person. Sick days at work and injuries caused by sports can be avoided.
