Osteochondroma: Diagnostic Tests

Obligatory medical device diagnostics.

  • Conventional radiography of the affected body region and adjacent joints, in two planes – because of their cartilaginous component, osteochondromas are not fully detected on radiographs
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI; computer-assisted cross-sectional imaging method (using magnetic fields, i.e., without X-rays)) – for the purpose of differentiation from other bone tumors and to determine the thickness of the cartilage cap (→ assessment of the risk of degeneration: possibly malignant from 20 mm!)
  • If necessary, computed tomography (CT; sectional imaging procedure (X-ray images from different directions with computer-based evaluation)) – for the purpose of determining the location, size and extent of the tumor.
