Other accompanying symptoms

Often heart stumbling occurs in isolation and only for a few seconds. However, accompanying symptoms can also occur, especially if the heart stutter lasts longer. Possible accompanying symptoms of heart stumbling can be restlessness and anxiety as well as increased sweating.

These accompanying symptoms usually occur as a reaction to the heart stumbling in the sense of a psychological fear reaction. Dizziness, shortness of breath or chest pain may occur much less frequently in the course of a heart stumble. These are warning symptoms that should lead to a doctor being consulted promptly.

The diagnosis

Heart stumbling is a symptom that is perceived subjectively. In order to objectify it, the derivation of an ECG is necessary. In most cases, however, the short derivation phase, about 10 seconds, is not sufficient with a normal ECG to record a heart stumble.

Therefore, a 24-hour ECG recording is recommended. The probability of detecting episodes of heart stumbling in the ECG within 24 hours is significantly higher in the case of frequent heart stumbling. In most cases, however, no diagnosis is necessary, since a heart stumble is often harmless.

In some cases, however, it can also be an indication of a previous damage to the heart. For this reason, further examinations such as cardiac ultrasound, exercise ECG or cardiac catheterization may be considered for certain patients. In some cases, a blood sample may also be taken to rule out thyroid dysfunction.

How can I tell if it is dangerous?

In the rarest cases, heart stumbling must be treated in peace and quiet, as it usually has no disease value whatsoever. People who suffer from a heart stutter as part of another underlying disease should be treated adequately. For example, if coronary heart disease or hyperthyroidism is present, drug therapy should be initiated.

In people who frequently suffer from heart stumbling, an attempt should be made to identify possible triggers. The frequency of heart stumbling can often be reduced by avoiding certain triggers. If the heart stutter persists and has a negative effect on everyday life, a therapy with different preparations can be considered.

First of all, an experiment can be carried out with an over-the-counter combination preparation of potassium and magnesium. There are numerous such preparations available in pharmacies and drugstores. One example is Tromcardin® as one of many available preparations.

The electrolytes contained can lead to a stabilization of the stimulation threshold of the heart and thus reduce the occurrence of heart stumbles. If no improvement can be achieved by this, the use of beta blockers is a further possibility. These drugs dampen the action of the heart and can reduce the occurrence of heart stumbling.

However, due to numerous possible side effects, beta blockers should only be taken after consultation with the treating physician and after a thorough risk-benefit analysis. There are numerous globules in homeopathy that can be used to treat a wide range of symptoms. This also includes the treatment of heart stumbles. Here are just a few examples of remedies that are believed to have a possible effect on heart stumbles: Adonis vernalis, Cactus, Ammonium carbonicum and Lycopus virginicus. There are no scientific studies that reliably prove the effectiveness of any of these preparations for the treatment of heart stumbles.
