Otrives

Definition

Otriven® contains the active ingredient xylometazoline hydrochloride. This is a drug in the group of rhinologicals. These are drugs that can be prescribed for use in the nose for the treatment of a cold.

Dosage form

Nose DropsBefore using Otriven® Nose Drops, the nose should be cleaned thoroughly. Blowing your nose is sufficient. The drops can then be instilled into each nostril with the head bent back.

For reasons of hygiene and to avoid infection, the nose drops should only be used by one person. Otriven® should not be used for more than one week. A longer use should be discussed with a doctor.

If this is not the case, a break of several days should be taken after seven days before starting a new application with Otriven® Nose Drops. Otriven® is less suitable for the treatment of chronic rhinitis, as too long use can lead to a shrinking of the nasal mucosa. The recommended daily dose is up to three times one or two drops into each nasal opening.

Mode of action

As mentioned above, Otriven® contains the active ingredient xylometazoline. This is a sympathetic mimetic, an agent that activates the sympathetic nervous system. Since it only binds to the alpha receptor, it has a vasoconstrictive component in the nasal mucosa.

The mucous membrane is less supplied with blood and swells. The effect occurs within 5 to 10 minutes after using the nasal drops. Better nasal breathing due to the swelling of the mucous membrane and better drainage of secretions are the result of the Otriven® Nose Drops.

Xylometazoline is usually used in salt form. This is achieved with hydrochloride. Otriven® Nose Drops are available without a prescription and can be purchased in pharmacies.

Fields of application

Otriven® is used in the following clinical pictures: rhinitis vasomotorica: an attack of runny nose; rhinitis allergica: allergy-related rhinitis; paranasal sinusitis and middle ear inflammation in connection with rhinitis: the easier drainage of nasal secretions allows better ventilation of the Eustachian tube or paranasal sinuses and faster healing.
