Ovary and Fallopian Tube Inflammation (Adnexitis): Complications

The following are the most important diseases or complications that can be caused by salpingitis or oophoritis (adnexitis/ovary and fallopian tube inflammation) as well:

Infectious and parasitic diseases (A00-B99).

  • Perihepatitis (Fitz-Hugh-Curtis syndrome) (10% of cases of adnexitis).
  • Sepsis (blood poisoning)

Mouth, esophagus (esophagus), stomach, and intestines (K00-K67; K90-K93).

  • Peritonitis/acute abdomen (peritonitis).
  • Fitz-Hugh-Curtis syndrome (synonyms: Fitz-Hugh and Curtis syndrome, FHC syndrome) – rare complication of pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) associated with perihepatitis (inflammation of the tissue surrounding the liver) (associated with chlamydial infection and gonorrhea)

Pregnancy, childbirth and puerperium (O00-O99).

  • Extrauterine pregnancy – implantation of the fertilized egg outside the uterus (womb) such as: Tubalgravidity (tubal pregnancy), Ovariangravidity (pregnancy in the ovary), Peritonealgravidity/Abdominalgravidity (abdominal pregnancy), or Cervicalgravidity (a pregnancy in the cervix).

Genitourinary system (kidneys, urinary tract – sex organs) (N00-N99).

  • Sterility
  • Tuboovarian abscess – encapsulated collection of pus in the fallopian tube/ovary area.
