Overview list of psychotropic drugs

A list of the psychotropic drugs would have to be very extensive since there are now extremely many different psychotropic drugs on the market. Nevertheless, with the help of a rough overview of the psychotropic drugs one can create a list that can be helpful to orientate oneself in the jungle of different drugs. In this list of psychotropic drugs the antidepressants are at the top of the list as they are the most frequently prescribed psychotropic drugs.

Next in the list of psychotropic drugs is the group of neuroleptics, which are also very frequently prescribed. The list of psychotropic drugs also includes tranquillants, hypnotics and antidementia drugs. The last two groups of psychotropic drugs are the phase prophylactics and the drugs for Parkinson’s disease.

Are psychotropic drugs available without a prescription?

Psychotropic drugs are extremely potent drugs that not only have strong effects but also have strong side effects. There are also some psychotropic drugs which can lead to dependence, such as benzodiazepines. This is the reason why hardly any psychotropic drugs can be bought over the counter.

However, there are some drugs, such as natural St. John’s wort, which helps against mild depression and some of which can be bought over the counter in pharmacies. However, St. John’s wort is not an over-the-counter psychotropic drug but so-called phyto-medicines, i.e. herbal medicines. The drug ARDEYDORM® is also similar to the psychotropic drugs as it can also be used to treat depression.

This can be bought as “psychotropic drugs” without prescription in pharmacies. Also some memory enhancing psychotropic drugs can be purchased over the counter in pharmacies. These include Tebonin®, which contains the memory enhancing special ginkgo extract EGb 761.

However, its positive effect is being critically discussed and is not considered to be clearly proven. In general, however, it is hardly possible to purchase psychotropic drugs without a prescription because the side effects are too high and patients must be regularly checked by a physician for their liver values and cardiac output to ensure that the patient does not become sicker than before due to the psychotropic drugs.
