Laboratory parameters of the 1st order – obligatory laboratory tests.
- Fasting glucose (fasting blood glucose), oral glucose tolerance test (oGTT) if necessary.
- HbA1c (long-term blood glucose).
- Fasting insulin serum level (HOMA index)Note: Insulin and testosterone serum levels are inversely correlated!
- Metabolic parameters
- Liver: alanine aminotransferase (ALT, GPT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST, GOT), gamma-glutamyl transferase (γ-GT, gamma-GT; GGT).
- Kidneys: Creatinine, urea, microalbuminuria.
- Measurement of atherosclerosis risk (arteriosclerosis, arteriosclerosis) by determining LDL cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, triglycerides, lipoprotein (a), homocysteine, fibrinogen, CRP.
Laboratory parameters 2nd order – depending on the results of the history, physical examination, etc. – for differential diagnostic clarification.
- Thyroid parameters – TSH
- Testosterone; DHEAS
- Leptin serum levels – peptide hormone involved in the control of hunger and satiety sensations.
- Serum C-peptide (part of proinsulin) – in suspected insulinoma, DD of hypoglycemia (hypoglycaemia factitia).
- If syndromal or other monogenetic form of obesity is suspected, molecular genetic diagnostics may be useful.
